RAJENDRA BAID – IN THE SERVICE OF THE PEOPLE

Son of Shri Pratap Singh Baid, Rajendra Baid was born on 10 August 1948. In 1964, the family shifted to Siliguri. He did his B. Com fromNorth Bengal University, Siliguri in 1967. He had started active participation in the family business since 1964.

In 1967, he was married to Sangita, who has been an active partner in all the activities of Rajendra Baid in various fields – a constant source of support and strength. They have three children. Son Vivek , Daughters Mamta and Deepika.

From a very young age, Rajendra Baid was fired up with a very strong desire to not to be a mere businessman, but to do something substantial for the people. Many people have good ideas and desire to turn into reality. Not many can. Rajendra Baid is the exception. Despite all hurdles, he has carried on, to do much that can be qualified as very substantial in the fields of education, social work, media, hoteliering, travel, tourism and other areas. His efforts – despite many tough hurdles – have yielded results, which are there for all to see and enjoy the benefits.

Some of the areas in which Rajendra Baid has put in untiring efforts, and continues to do so are:

EDUCATION: He started the Vidyasagar Primary School in Siliguri in 1975. It is a Bengali – medium school. He also setup the Acharya SriTulsi Primary School, which is a government – recognized school now.

SOCIAL SERVICE FOR THE COMMUNITY: As an active member of the Rotary Club and many other organizations,  Rajendra Baid has been deeply involved in a number of social welfare projects. In 1980, Rajendra Baid was elected as municipal commissioner to Siliguri Municipality, and used his tenure in office and initiated a number of community service projects and ensured their fruitful running.

VOICE OF THE PEOPLE: For the promotion of the Hindi Language and to provide an independent voice to the people – without fear and without prejudice – Rajendra Baid, as a fortnightly journal, started Siliguri Samachar in 1976. It has evolved into the most popular Hindi daily in the region – Janpath Samachar. This paper has provided quality journalism to the people and mounted campaigns – without fear and unmindful of threats or dire consequences – against all that is wrong, irrespective of the fact that the wrong – doers were the ‘ high and mighty ’. Janpath Samachar continues to be the fearless voice of the people.

TRAVEL AND TOURISM: Bitten by the bug of promoting travel and tourism in the region and to provide the benefits from its important industry to the people, Rajendra Baid started The Cindrella Hotel which has not only become the most favoured hotel by Indians and foreigners alike, but has also been the base to help put Siliguri on the Tourism Map. The Cindrella has become the home for such events as the annual ‘ pilgrimage ’ of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway lovers from the U.K. and the annual meet of the Buddhists from all over the world. The hotel is exclusively staffed by local personnel.

Realizing that synergy is vital for any meaningful tourism effort, Rajendra Baid has worked for unity amongst the region’s hoteliers and the travel trade through organisations like the Eastern Himalaya Tourism Association and Kanchanjungha Tourism Association. He organized meets, events and discussions on how to create and market a high quality tourism product which brings benefits to the local people.

THE WORLD HERITAGE DHR: The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway earning the status of a UNESCO World Heritage site has brought fame, pride and responsibility to the region. Rajendra Baid has worked in close harmony with Darjeeling Himalayan Railway Society of U.K., the local people in various fields and the Indian Railway authorities at various levels. The result has been the formation of the DHR India Support Group and concerted efforts to try and do the very best towards restoration, conservation, preservation of this great asset and to ensure that it gives unique travel experience to people at home and from abroad – for many, many years to come.

EVER ONWARDS: Rajendra Baid has not stopped dreaming of greater importance of Siliguri as a destination in its own right, as a vital tourism hub and as noteworthy city. A city, which has pride in itself and acts as a stepping stone for greater prosperity, leading to greater happiness of the people in this region. Since he is not just a mere dreamer but continues to work making his dreams come true, his efforts continue.
